Setting The Good Example
by
Sis. Karen L. Progar
On a recent trip to the West Coast, I was amazed to discover that two natural sisters have each been members of the Ladies’ Uplift Circle for 80 years. Born Josephine and Antionette Aquilino,
the sisters are charter members of the Lorain, Ohio Circle that was organized in January of 1928. Coincidentally, both sisters are currently members of the San Diego, California Branch.
Sis. Josephine Dominico moved to California in 1974 when her husband retired. A widow, Sis. Josephine lives with her son and daughter in law.
Sis. Josephine asked for her baptism at 16 in 1932 on Christmas and was baptized the following Sunday. She shared with me that Bro. Leonard Alessio preached such a powerful sermon that Wednesday that she
was touched physically. She stated that a visitor sitting next to her could feel that something was happening. Sis. Josephine was painfully shy and left the meeting to pray to the Lord so that she could have the courage to rise and ask for her baptism.
She was baptized by Bro. Ermenegildo Ciccati.
It’s incredible to think that from being so shy, Sis. Josephine went on to be a Sunday School teacher for many years. In addition to being a deaconess,
she handled many fundraising projects and was MBA secretary when she was only 12 years old.
Our second highlighted sister is Sis. Antionette Ciaravino, the name by which many of us know her. Sis. Antionette was baptized at april Conference in Detroit, Michigan in 1937, with a number of other young people,
including her future husband, Bro. Gorie and another biological sister, Violet Aquilino Thomas. The sermon on hers special day was from the Book of Mormon, Mosiah 18:10,
where Alma asks (in effect) “If ye believe all these things, what have ye against being baptized?” Sis. Antionette was baptized by Bro, Rocco Biscotti and confirmed by Bro. William H. Cadman.
When we were talking about the 85th Anniversary Edition of the Come and Dine Cookbook, Sis. Antionette happened to mention that she was chairman of the first cookbook
committee that compiled the original “Come and Dine” Cookbook.
In meeting with these sister and reminiscing with the, I realized once again what a joy and uplift the testimonies of our older Saints are.
I encourage you to spend time with these living treasures in your area. I also encourage anyone who would desire to do so,
to write a little recap of that sister’s testimony and email it, along with a picture (if you can take one) to our editor,
Sis. Theresa Bravo at editor@generalladiescircle.org so that she can submit it to the Gospel News or post it on the circle website.
If you feel that you are not a write, send the information on your visit to Sis. Terri,
along with your email address and phone number and she’ll write the article.
Let’s make an effort to honor our examples while they are still among us so that
they can know how they have influenced others. As you can see, we are going to call this series, “Setting the Good Example”.
Please find the time to make a contribution. I can’t wait to hear about your experiences.
